Our Story

How it all started...

Mt. Zion Baptist Church was established in 1834 when 4 men and 7 women brought their letters of membership from surrounding churches to the area to the home of Thomas Johnson.  It is interesting to note that some of the founding members of the church would have been alive during the signing of the Declaration of Independence and that the church pre-dates the Southern Baptist Convention.

5 buildings have housed Mt. Zion Baptist Church since its establishment.  Sunday School was formed in 1898.  In the early years of the church, worship services were held once a month.  In 1967 the church chose to begin holding worship services each Sunday.

Expanding the vision...

Mt. Zion Baptist Church is a local body of believers.  Over the years, as the body has grown, the church staff has expanded to multiple pastors and support staff positions. The church has established ministry to all age groups and offers a weekday preschool to our community.  We now gather in  multiple worship services each Sunday, provide children and youth ministries, and continue to pursue our mission of Making Disciples of All Nations as we reach out to our community and share the gospel throughout the world.

Where we are headed...

Mt. Zion commits to be a faithful church making whole disciples of every generation until the return of Christ.  We will continue to proclaim God's Word as our authority for all of life as we pursue sharing the gospel with those in our community, our country,  and beyond our nation.  Our goal is to be strategic in making disciples as we follow the example of Christ and the commands of Scripture.  The results will remain in the sovereign hands of our great God.
